Campaign summary
The “Putting the U.S. and Canada On Trial’ campaign seeks to hold the U.S. and Canada responsible for supporting, legitimizing, and funding the Honduran narco-state as the former President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández goes to trial in New York in February 2024.
Main campaign messages
- The U.S., Canada, and “international community” consistently lied and covered up the true nature of the narco-dictatorship that ran Honduras for 12 years consistently calling them the post-coup regimes “democratic allies.”
- The U.S. and Canada did this in order to impose regimes beneficial to their own political and economic interests while generating a human rights crisis and forced migration crisis in Honduras.
- The crimes against the Honduran people demand justice. There must be political and legal accountability in the U.S. and Canada (and also in Honduras) for the behaviour of our governments in supporting abuses, violence, and drug trafficking post-coup governments.
Campaign demands
- The declassification of documents pertaining to the U.S. and Canadian involvement in the 2009 Honduran coup and subsequent administrations of Porfirio Lobo Sosa and Juan Orlando Hernández (JOH). This includes detailed information about DEA operations in Honduras and the full extent of U.S. and Canadian support, training, and funding for the Honduran military and police forces.
- Congressional and Parliamentary investigations or inquiries of U.S. and Canadian support for the 2009 coup and post-coup governments including human rights violations committed by Honduran state security forces and whether U.S. and Canadian officials acted negligently and/or lied to cover-up electoral fraud, violence and other abuses during and following the coup.
- Reparations for the Indigenous victims of the DEA-led Ahuas massacre in consultation with the victims and their representatives.
- An immediate end to U.S. opposition to progressive reforms that address the root causes of migration that roll-back post-coup policies in Honduras.
- Drop support for the ISDS clauses in trade agreements with Honduras that allow U.S. and foreign companies to sue the Honduran state. This includes claims that arise from odious investments made by U.S. companies under the JOH dictatorship.

How to get involved
- Send a letter to Canadian Members of Parliament here and U.S. Congressional representatives here and demand investigations into the role of our governments in backing the narco-state in Honduras.
- Add your organization’s name to our organizational sign on letter for Canadian organizations here and U.S. organizations here.
- Contact your local media and spread the word. Tell your local press to pay attention to the up-coming JOH trial in New York and emphasize how they should write about the U.S. and Canadian role in supporting JOH while he was “shoving the cocaine up the noses of the gringos” (JOH’s words) as the Honduran President. Send them the HSN press release and act as a contact person between the campaign and them.
- Draft an op-ed and submit it to your local paper. If you want a fact checker or someone to read it over, we are happy to help out (honsolnetwork@gmail.com).
- Contact your elected officials: Tell them they should also be paying attention to the trial and that an investigation of the U.S. and Canadian role in the construction of a narco-state must take place.
- Read the campaign’s launch statement and updates: Creating the conditions of the construction of the narco-state. Share them on your social media platforms.
